7 Ingredients to use in your natural skin care

Our daily skincare routine has changed throughout the years and  we have come full circle. When our great grandmothers were young, they did not have many of the fancy beauty products we have now. They had no option but to make their own products using natural ingredients. Now that we have tried the conventional products, many including potentially toxic ingredients, we have realised that natural is better. But which natural products should we incorporate into our skincare routine? Here are 7 ingredients that stand out.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the most diverse oils and has become extremely popular in recent years. It is extracted from fresh coconut flesh and is a wonderful moisturiser.  If you like to whip up your own concoctions, adding sugar to coconut oil gives you a refreshing sugar scrub to use in the shower. It can be found in many natural body lotions, shampoos and massage oils. Furthermore, using coconut oil when cooking is very beneficial. It contains healthy fats and antibacterial properties.

Jojoba Oil 

Jojoba oil is chemically closest to the skin’s natural oils. For this reason, it has a wide range of uses.  It can be used on your face to oil cleanse removing the day’s makeup and grime. It is a fantastic body moisturiser being particularly good at healing dry and flaking skin like psoriasis and eczema. Add some essential oils and use it to create natural fragrances and even conditioners for your hair.  Ensure you check the labels and use organic and cold pressed oils only.

Argan Oil 

Argan Oil is another oil which is great for healing dry skin and acne.  It can also be added to green tea and essential oils to make a skin toner. Many people have said that rubbing Argan Oil into the skin while pregnant can prevent stretch marks. The Vitamin A and E in the oil helps to rejuvenate the skin and keep it supple by retaining its elasticity. Argan oil is more expensive than jojoba and coconut oil but a little goes a long way!

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has been used for skin infections and burns for thousands of years. The gel extracted from the leaves cools sunburns, eases psoriasis and more. Aloe vera is found in many skin and hair care products but you can buy the gel or juice and use them in your own recipes.


This natural wax is a top ingredient  used in many natural skincare products. It is used in thicker cosmetics such as natural lip balms and organic handmade soap A study in 2003 showed that a cream with beeswax was more effective in baby care than one with petroleum jelly.

Shea Butter

Shea butter has become very popular in the last decade. You don’t need to mix it with anything to enjoy its fantastic moisturising properties. Use it on curly hair to reduce frizz, soothe dandruff and seal in moisture. Add carrier and essential oils to create rich face and body creams. Shea butter can also help with burns, stretch marks and scars.

Sea Salt

Sea salt is packed with minerals like sodium and potassium. Just like sugar, you can add oil or raw honey to create an exfoliating face or body scrub safe enough for frequent use.  Because the salt removes water from the hair shaft, it is great for homemade hair styling products like hair spray.
